Comprehensive Eye Exams

Comprehensive eye exams are a key way to maintain optical eye health and vision. We’re dedicated to providing thorough and personalized eye care to our patients with our comprehensive eye exams. Read on to learn more.

Why are comprehensive eye exams important?

Regular eye exams are essential not just for updating your prescription but for early detection of eye diseases and conditions that could potentially lead to vision loss if left untreated. Comprehensive eye exams can uncover a variety of health issues, including glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and even signs of systemic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.

What to expect during your exam

Our quick but thorough adult eye exams usually take about 15 minutes, allowing us to efficiently cater to 2-3 patients per hour. We offer several checks during your visit.

  1. Auto refractometry – This fancy-sounding test helps us figure out your exact prescription for glasses or contacts.
  2. Fundus photography – Included in the majority (80-85%) of our appointments, this test captures detailed images of the retina, aiding in the detection and monitoring of various eye conditions.
  3. Visual field assessment and OCT – For those who need a more in-depth look, we offer these advanced tests. Visual field checks your peripheral vision, while OCT gives us a detailed image of the retina’s layers.

Different types of eye exams

We’ve got 3 types of appointments to suit your needs:

  • Routine appointments: perfect for general vision checks and prescription updates (typically, no retinal photography here)
  • Medical appointments: for specific eye health concerns, these include more comprehensive testing
  • Advanced eye examinations: these can take up to 30 minutes and include specialized tests like visual field assessment and OCT if needed.

What makes us special

At Eyes.nyc, we go the extra mile with advanced diagnostic tools. Our regular inclusion of fundus photography and the availability of OCT and visual field assessments mean you’re getting some of the best care around.

How often should you have an eye exam?

Generally, you should have an eye exam every one to 2 years, depending on your age, risk factors, and whether you wear glasses or contacts. Your optometrist can give you personalized advice based on your needs.
